F-16CM Special Color of the 555th Fighter Squadron "Triple Nickels"
Operation "Rolling Thunder": an operation of bombing in Vietnam, the first major campaign, aimed at breaking the kidneys of the North Vietnam, 1965-1968. Operation "Bolo": it is launched during the operation Rolling Thunder, in my opinion, can well be defined as a magnificent cunning, a great intuition, a great bluff, orchestrated by Col. Robin Olds and which success, contributing to the shooting down of 7 Mig-21 Nord Vientamites! January 2, 1967 For summing up, since the bombing operations involved often even the heavy F-105s and the North Vietnamese fighter took them constantly aiming with heavy losses, Col. Robin Olds, ace of the World War II, just became Commander of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing (8th TFW) "Wolfpack" for countering the threat, he had an intuition that would change this paradigm linked to the F-105. Framed the 8th TFW at the time also included the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron (555th TFS) "triple Nickels" who contributed to “Operation Bolo", which consisted of physically replacing the F-105s in their bombing, with the F-4 Phantom II, more performing and very well armed, thus making the North Vietnamese believe that they were F-105s instead. This strategy consisted of leaving names of radio call, routes, schedules i.e. simulate the same flight characteristics of the F-105 . The strategy worked, the North Vietnamese fell for it in the trap and on January 2, 1967 the F-4s of the 555th TFS contributed to the shooting, out of a total of 7 Mig-21s, of 4 Migs. The 555th Fighter Squadron (555th FS) recently wanted pay tribute, on the 60th anniversary, to the remarkable achievements achieved in On that occasion, creating an example of Aviano's F-16CM "Special Color", drawing the tail with the Vietnam camouflage adopted at that time, with 7 stars in evidence bordered in white, on two vertical rows side by side, one of four and the other of three, to underline the remarkable test sustained, with on the one hand the words "Rolling Thunder" and on the other "Operation Bolo", both at the base of the tail, to remember an event of considerable importance. At the end of the war in Vietnam, the total kills of Migs are 39, making the 555th TFS the better!

P.S.: if you notice the patch of the 555th TFS/FS contains , around the design of the Eagle first and then the Fighting Falcon, as it has changed over time, there are just 39 stars to signify the 39 Mig Kills in Vietnam.

Operazione “Rolling Thunder”: un’ operazione di bombardamento in Vietnam, la prima grande campagna, atta a spezzare le reni al Vietnam del Nord, 1965-1968 . Operazione “Bolo”: viene lanciata durante l’operazione Rolling Thunder, a mio avviso si può ben definire una magnifica furbata, una grande intuizione, un grande bluff, orchestrata dal Col. Robin Olds e che ha avuto successo, contribuendo all’abbattimento di ben 7 Mig-21 Nord Vietnamiti! 2 Gennaio 1967.
Per sommi capi, riassumendo, poichè le operazioni di bombardamento coinvolgevano spesso anche i pesanti F-105 e la caccia Nord Vietnamita li prendeva costantemente di mira con pesanti perdite, il Col. Robin Olds, asso della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, appena divenuto Comandante dell’8Th Tactical Fighter Wing (8th TFW) “Wolfpack” per contrastare la minaccia, ebbe un’ intuizione che avrebbe cambiato questo paradigma legato agli F-105 . Inquadrato nello 8Th TFW al tempo c’era anche il 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron (555th TFS) “triple Nickels” che diede il suo contributo nell’ Operazione “Bolo”, che consisteva nel sostituire fisicamente gli F-105 nelle loro missioni di bombardamento, con gli F-4 Phantom II, più prestanti e molto bene armati, facendo cosi’ credere ai Nord Vietnamiti che fossero invece F-105 . Questa strategia consisteva nel lasciare nominativi di chiamata radio, rotte, orari cioè simulare le stesse caratteristiche di volo degli F-105 . La strategia funzionò, i Nord Vietnamiti ci cascarono in pieno nel tranello ed il 2 Gennaio 1967 gli F-4 del 555th TFS contribuivano all’abbattimento , di ben 4 Mig, su un totale di 7 Mig-21. Il 555th Fighter Squadron (555th FS) recentemente ha voluto rendere omaggio, nel 60° anniversario, ai notevoli risultati ottenuti in quella occasione, creando un’esemplare di F-16CM “Special Color” di Aviano, disegnando la coda con la mimetica Vietnam adottata a quel tempo, con in evidenza 7 stelle rosse bordate di bianco, su due file verticali affiancate, una di quattro e l’altra di tre, a sottolineare la notevole prova sostenuta, con da un lato della coda la scritta “Rolling Thunder” e dall’ altra “Operation Bolo”, entrambe alla base della coda, per ricordare così un’evento di notevole importanza. Alla fine della guerra in Vietnam, gli abbattimenti totali di Mig risultano ben 39, facendo diventare il 555th TFS il migliore! Ci è stata data l’opportunità di fotografare l’F-16 Special Color in questione, grazie all’interessamento e impegno dell’Ufficio Pubbliche Relazioni di Aviano nella persona di Angela Zammattio, che ringraziamo per aver organizzato un tale evento.
P.S.: se notate lo stemma del 555th TFS/FS contiene , attorno al disegno dell’Aquila prima e Falco da Combattimento poi, così com’è cambiato nel tempo, ci sono proprio 39 stelle a significare i 39 Mig Kills in Vietnam.
