Febbraio 1995: il primo rischieramento negli USA del “Triple Nickel”
Quella mattina del 16 febbraio la pioggia iniziò a cadere già durante i preparativi per la partenza ed ancora più insistentemente quando i Fighting Falcons lasciarono il loop per portarsi al punto di “last check” che precede il decollo. La trasvolata atlantica prevedeva una tappa a Lajes Field ( Azzorre ) e numerosi rifornimenti in volo prima dell’atterraggio a Tyndall AFB in Florida. Il rischieramento aveva in programma una serie di valutazioni del tipo air-to-air WSEP ( Weapons System Evaluation Program ) a Tyndall AFB e air-to-ground WSEP ad Eglin AFB, la conduzione di missioni DACT ( Dissimilar Air Combat Training ) usufruendo del Tyndall’s Supersonic Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation Range, la messa a punto delle procedure di conduzione delle missioni AFAC ( Airborne Forward Air Controller ) attraverso un ciclo di addestramento con piloti di OA-10A del 355th Wing di Davis Monthan AFB , ed infine, a partire dal 1° marzo, la partecipazione all’esercitazione Green Flag presso i Nellis’ Electronic Range della Nellis AFB in Nevada. Nel periodo compreso dal 16 febbraio al 1° aprile, personale di due reparti della AF Reserve, il 704th FS / 924th FG ( Bergstrom ARB, Texas ) e il 706th FS / 926th FW ( NAS-JRB New Orleans, Louisiana ) sostituirono quello del 555th FS nella conduzione delle missioni “Denny Flight” sulla Bosnia Erzegovina, volando con gli F-16C del 466th FS / 419th FW Diamondbacks ( codice HI, di base a Hill AFB, Utah ) temporaneamente bloccati ad Aviano nel viaggio di ritorno dalla Turchia ( Incirlik AB ), dove avevano preso parte all’operazione “Provide Comfort”.

That February 16 morning was already rainy while crews were checking the jets and pilots were walking-around, but it fell down stronger when they began to taxi towards the last- check point before to taking-off. The flight across the Atlantic was scheduled for one stop at Lajes Field ( Azores ) and several air-refuelling before landing at Tyndall AFB, Florida. The deployment would have allowed some valuation test through the air-to-air WSEP ( Weapons System Evaluation Program ) at Tyndall AFB and the air-to-ground WSEP at Eglin AFB, some DACT ( Dissimilar Air Combat Training ) sorties into the Tyndall’s Supersonic Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation Range, the setting-up of the procedure to carry out AFAC missions (Airborne Forward Air Controller ) with fast jet through a training cycle with 355thWing OA-10s pilots at Davis Monthan AFB, and lately from March 1, the Green Flag participation carried out over the Nellis’ Electronic Range at Nellis AFB, Nevada. Meantime, from February 16 to April 1, personnel of two AFRes units, the 704th FS / 924th FG ( Bergstrom ARB, Texas ) and the 706th FS / 926th FW ( NAS-JRB New Orleans, Louisiana ) replaced the 555th FS on carrying out “Denny Flight” missions over the Bosnia Herzegovina, flying 466th FS / 419th FW ( code HI, Hill AFB, Utah ) Diamondbacks F-16Cs, temporary stopped at Aviano AB on their coming back way from Turkey ( Incirlik AB ) to USA, where they flew “Provide Comfort” sorties over the Northern of Iraq.
