October 1998: The Triple Nickel come back home from Operation Northern Watch

Friday afternoon 30th of October the Triple Nickel F-16s came back home from Turkey. The Fighting Falcons with green “stripe” came into land on runway 05 after almost four hours no-stop flight from Incirlik AB. In that Turkish Air Base, women and men of the 555th Fighter Squadron deployed their jets to support Operation Northern Watch. The Operation Northern Watch ( from 1997 to 2003 ) was conducted in order to enforcing a no-fly zone above the 36th parallel and monitoring the Iraqi compliance with UN Security Council resolutions 678, 687 and 688, so giving to the Kurdish a some kind of protection against Iraqi military forces of Saddam Hussein, some way or other re-organized after Gulf War first. This Triple Nickel’s deployment was the first one outside the Balkan Region of 31st Fighter Wing’s flying units since re-activation time at Aviano AB. There will not be anymore deployment like that from Aviano AB flying units, as long as Balkan crisis will be over.
Word of thanks to the WFHR 555th Fighter Squadron Commander Lt. Col . Dave L. Goldfein and to the TSgt. Tim Lebanon who escorted us through the Triple Nickel loop.
