Operazione "Odyssey Dawn" - 2011 -
E’ venerdì 25 marzo 2011. L’operazione Odyssey Dawn è iniziata da 6 giorni, a seguito della Risoluzione 1973 del Consiglio di Sicurezza del Nazioni Unite che ha autorizzato la coalizione internazionale a mettere in piedi un’operazione militare aerea per proteggere la popolazione civile libica, e i velivoli di base ad Aviano del 31th FW e quelli per l’occasione rischierati hanno cominciato fin da subito a compiere missioni sul territorio della Libia. Il Public Affairs del 31st Fighter Wing e il Comando Aeroporto dell’Aeronautica Militare hanno voluto consentire a giornalisti e televisioni di catturare immagini dell’attività in corso da tre distinte “locations” all’interno dell’aeroporto, e di avere da alcuni militari USAF che partecipano all’operazione utili notizie sulle modalità di svolgimento, tanto quanto dal Comando Aeroporto Aviano dettagli dell’attività del personale dell’Aeronautica Militare di stanza al Pagliano & Gori.
Un pilota del 555th Fighter Squadron, uno dei due squadroni di base ad Aviano, ha raccontato la missione della notte precedente, effettuata con l’ausilio degli occhiali per la visione notturna che aiutano notevolmente l’operatività al buio dei piloti. La durata e i numerosi rifornimenti in volo mettono a dura prova la resistenza fisica, ma l’addestramento ricevuto aiuta a superare le difficoltà. Le operazioni sono a volte condotte da assetti di differenti Forze Aeree secondo le modalità coordinate dai comandi.
Uno specialista parla del proprio lavoro a contatto con i velivoli. La propria unità non è di base ad Aviano, ma qui rischierata per l’operazione in corso. I militari USAF e US NAVY in TDY ( Temporaty DutY, ovvero rischieramento temporaneo ) sono numerosi e non conoscono la realtà di Aviano AB, una sergente del 31st FW ci spiega che ai “nuovi arrivati” viene subito fornita una serie di informazioni su regole, luoghi e servizi per poter orientarsi in base ed eventualmente fuori della base.
Ma, ricordando che Aviano è un Aeroporto dell’Aeronautica Militare, di seguito riportiamo la dichiarazione che il Ten. Valentino STRAZZERI, Ufficiale PI del Comando Aeroporto Aviano, ha rilasciato nel corso delle interviste:
"Il personale dell'Aeronautica Militare Italiana è presente anche presso l'Aeroporto di Aviano per fornire il necessario supporto all'attività di volo operativa statunitense, nell'ambito nell'operazione "Odyssey Dawn".Tale supporto viene in particolare garantito attraverso il personale italiano addetto al servizio controllo spazio aereo, presso la torre di controllo e il servizio RADAR. Tali servizi sono assicurati tramite standard addestrativi e operativi nazionali, così come previsto dagli accordi bilaterali in vigore tra l'Italia e gli Stati Uniti; tali accordi prevedono inoltre la piena responsabilità del Comando Italiano nell'intrattenere e sviluppare a livello locale i rapporti con i Media e le autorità politiche, per qualsiasi necessità determinata dalle attività della base, siano esse nazionali che statunitensi. Ed è oggi in tale veste, che l'Ufficiale PI e comunicazione è presente a tale media Conference in rappresentanza delle attività dell'Aeronautica Militare italiana, del Comando Aeroporto di Aviano e del Comandante, Colonnello Luca Cappelli."
I velivoli al momento coinvolti sono gli F-16CM e CJ “Fighting Falcon”, gli A-10A “Thunderbolt II”, gli F-15E “Strike Eagle”, C-17A “Globemaster III” dell’USAF e gli EA-18G Growler della US NAVY.

"Odyssey Dawn" Operation -2011-
It is Friday, March 25, 2011. Operation Odyssey Dawn began 6 days ago, following the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973 which authorized the international coalition to set up an air military operation to protect the civilian population. Libya, and the aircraft based in Aviano of the 31th FW and those deployed for the occasion immediately began to carry out missions on the territory of Libya. The Public Affairs of the 31st Fighter Wing and the Air Force Airport Command wanted to allow journalists and televisions to capture images of the activity in progress from three distinct "locations" inside the airport, and to obtain from some USAF military useful information on the procedures involved in the operation, as well as details of the activities of the Air Force personnel stationed at Pagliano & Gori from the Aviano Airport Command.
A pilot of the 555th Fighter Squadron, one of the two squadrons based in Aviano, recounted the mission of the previous night, carried out with the aid of night vision goggles which greatly help the pilots to operate in the dark. The duration and the numerous in-flight supplies put a strain on physical endurance, but the training received helps to overcome the difficulties. The operations are sometimes conducted by the assets of different Air Forces according to the modalities coordinated by the commands.
A specialist talks about his work in contact with aircraft. Its unit is not based in Aviano, but here deployed for the current operation. The USAF and US NAVY military in TDY (Temporaty DutY, or temporary redeployment) are numerous and do not know the reality of Aviano AB, a sergeant of the 31st FW explains to us that the "newcomers" are immediately provided with a series of information on rules, places and services to be able to find one's way around the base and possibly outside the base.
But, remembering that Aviano is an Air Force Airport, below is the statement that Lt. Valentino STRAZZERI, PI Officer of the Aviano Airport Command, issued during the interviews:
"The personnel of the Italian Air Force is also present at the Aviano Airport to provide the necessary support to the US operational flight activity, as part of the" Odyssey Dawn "operation. This support is in particular guaranteed through the Italian personnel assigned to the airspace control service, at the control tower and the RADAR service. These services are ensured through national training and operating standards, as required by the bilateral agreements in force between Italy and the United States; these agreements also provide for the full responsibility of the Italian Command in maintaining and developing relations with the media and political authorities at the local level, for any need determined by the activities of the base, both national and US. And it is today in this capacity that the PI and Communications Officer is present at this media Conference representing the activities of the Italian Air Force, the Aviano Airport Command and the Commander, Colonel Luca Cappelli".
The aircraft currently involved are the F-16CM and CJ "Fighting Falcon", the A-10A "Thunderbolt II", the F-15E "Strike Eagle", the USAF C-17A "Globemaster III" and the EA-18G Growler of the US NAVY.
